Our newest residents, Harry Houdini and Aurora (Rory) are a lovely pair of cheeky chappies! These boys are super inquisitive, friendly and love heading out into the animal room for a run. They are The Island’s first ever chinchillas and have put staff to the test with their very specific needs, but they sure are worth it!

‘A chinchilla’s fur is considered the softest in the world: 30 times softer than human hair! Chinchillas also have 50 or more hairs per follicle as opposed to humans, who only have one.’

Harry & Rory’s Story

Harry and Rory came to The Haven in February 2020. They once lived with a busy-but-loving family who were struggling to keep up with looking after the boys, whilst going about their daily lives. So, it was decided that the boys would come to live with us at the farm!

Never had The Island seen any chinchillas (or chinnies as our young people affectionately call them), let alone homed them! So, it was time to get the books out a learn how to take care of this dynamic duo!

Harry is the oldest of the chins, born in 2015, and was aptly named after famous magician and disappearing-act Harry Houdini… On the day that the boys arrived, their previous owner had realized that there was only one chin in the cage! Flustered and upset, she dropped Rory off and went straight back home to look for Harry. Dismayed, there was no sign of him anywhere – until a voice cried ‘he’s in the neighbour’s back garden’! Despite everyone’s concern, Harry was lapping up the sunlight and nibbling on little bits of bark found in the neighbour’s garden – he had somehow jumped the fence at the front of the house and made his way into the back garden for a bit of grub! Harry was safe and sound, with a full belly and a new name!

Meanwhile, Rory was settling in well at The Island, setting his head to rest on a comfy pillow – which, although Rory is male, he reminded staff so much of Sleeping Beauty, hence his name Aurora (Rory, for short)! Rory was born in 2017, and is happy to chill, nibble on some bark and just watch what everyone else is up to! Rory loves a sand bath and is always up for a good old snuggle with our young people. He’s also happy to be reunited with his best pal, after Harry’s disappearing act.

The Chinchillas in action

Video Credit:

The Island Project is an alternative education facility which is based on The Island Community Haven Farm. At the provision, many hard to reach young people learn to manage their social, emotional and mental health by participating in animal-assisted learning, many other outdoor learning activities, alongside AimVoc qualifications.

This video has been created alongside the young people who attend The Haven and who care for and love all of our animals.

Chinchilla Welfare Considerations

Chinchillas are very complex animals who largely live on a strict diet of bark, pellets and hay. This is because chinchillas can develop a series of complications from ingesting the wrong kinds of food, they can have absolutely NO fruit, seeds, veggies, salts or minerals! In most cases, food and treats that are labelled for a chinchilla or ‘safe’ in pet shops, usually aren’t.

A chinchilla’s teeth are continually growing and should be checked regularly. If your chinchillas have bright white teeth (a human’s dream), this is an indicator of poor health and diet. What we should hope to see are bright orange/yellow teeth to ensure that a chin is healthy!

Because chinchillas are native to parts of South America, they thrive in cool conditions and do not have sweat glands! Chinchillas are extremely prone to heatstroke, which can prove to be fatal. An ideal temperature for housing chinchillas should be between 14°C and should not exceed 21°C. It is a huge misconception that chinchillas will benefit from a household fan, as these do not reduce a room’s humidity and ideally should have access to an air conditioning unit.

How can you help?

When rehoming an animal, there is a lot to consider; including staff expertise and further training requirements, accommodation and space, equipment costs, and dietary requirements, just to name a few!

The biggest and most effective way to support The Island Community Haven is through adopting an animal. Your adoption and support will allow us to continue to care for animals who are in need of a second chance. There are many individual perks to adopting an animal which are detailed below; but many of these rewards spread much further into the wider community.

Rescue and rehomed animals will now have the opportunity to live a free-range lifestyle, to help young people manage their mental health and to feel love and care, which they themselves perhaps have not experienced before. None of this would be possible without the animal adoring communities of Draycott, Borrowash, Risley and beyond.

The Island Community Haven has a private group area for all Gold and Platinum supporters. The area has regular updates including virtual tours of the farm and opportunities to interact with staff and animals. The content in this area is exclusive for those who have adopted an animal.

The Island Community Haven runs many other services outside of adopting an animal; The Island Project is an Alternative Provision which supports vulnerable young people who for a range of complex reasons are not accessing mainstream schooling, so instead young people access the farm and participant in animal-assisted learning, outside of the classroom-based learning, woodwork, art, gardening and much more.

Young People take part in regular English and Media sessions to bring you monthly newsletters written by the young people at The Island Project Farming & Education Centre.

Oversight of the newsletter will be completed by a member of staff who will also include many other relevant updates.

Throughout the year The Island Community Haven would love to invite everyone who has adopted an animal to come to the farm and see us in action. Dates are released throughout the year via email and social media.

Patrons will have exclusive use of the farm, meaning supporters can bring the family along to feed, fuss and engage with all of our animals. Staff will be at hand with activities and informative chats.

Hot drinks and food will also be available, making patron visits an ideal trip out for the family.

Sundays 10 am – 12 midday. Booking essential (Gold & Platinum – Free)

The purpose of The Island Community Haven meetups is to allow the local community the opportunity to visit a farm, which has lots of rescued animals and help care for them, maintain their accommodation and carry out minor repairs. Although the farm is utilized throughout the week by many different services, maintenance of the farm can build up. Together, during meetups volunteers can help keep the farm, animals and surrounding areas well kept.

The farm also hosts a community allotment patch, which is accessed throughout the week by young people and partners at The Island Project as well as those who attend meetups. In the garden you can expect to be learning gardening techniques, keeping fit while in nature and taking healthy food home for the family.

The farm is located on a 3-acre patch of land in Draycott which boarders Borrowash and Risley. Although the aims of meetups are to volunteer – socialising and meeting likeminded people is also a big part of the session. No previous experience is required, just a ‘can do’ attitude. Children under 16 or those with learning difficulties or additional support requirements must be accompanied by an adult.

Please contact Alison on 07970865154 before attending to secure your place.

As the Island Community Haven grows and becomes more sustainable more and more services will come to fruition. Discount is 50% for Gold and Platinum supporters.

Current services available for discount:

  • Exclusive use of site rental: The farm site can be rented for a range of business or personal occasions. For more information please click here
  • Party rental: Special Educational Needs (SEN) parties can be facilitated with trained staff provided. For more information please click here

Alternatively, this service supports those who are just starting out; horse manure can be used to create new planting beds.
  • Workshops: Bringing experts to the farm to share knowledge and experiences is something the Haven is looking to develop. As a Silver or Platinum member, you will receive 50% of the entrance pricing for you and your visiting group.

Platinum supporters have the opportunity to use the farm space for an occasion of your choice for a morning, afternoon or evening session – for FREE (2-hour slots). This could be a social group, youth group, parties, family gathering, corporate meeting venue etc.

Booking is subject to availability, please contact us for more information.
